Discovery Day

Discovery Day is typically held on a Saturday morning in October for 5th and sixth grade girls, and a Saturday Morning in February for 3rd and 4th grade girls.  It is often held at Hopkins Jr High School and includes an optional visit to the school's new planetarium.  Nine classes are typically offered, and you can take part in any five of the nine.  Class subjects differ from Discovery Day to Discovery Day.   Our Discovery Day Album shows girls enjoying the typical set of classes listed below.

Consider being one of our presenters or helpers.  We need donations of door prizes: books about science or nature, science kits, computer games, etc.  If you can help, give our local branch a call at (510) 728-9700.  The Discovery day coordinator, Miriam Keller, will return your call.

Worldly Wanda

Worldly Wanda is the Fremont Branch's Gender Equity Ambassador.   Her mission is to travel the world spreading the word of gender equity, and to bring hope and visibility to women around the world.  Visit Wanda’s MySpace account at http://www.myspace.com/WorldlyWanda .
 
Designed as a talking point for gender equity, Worldly Wanda can be colored and taken anywhere.   Color your own Worldly Wanda and take her with you on your trips.  Take her picture in a famous place or with a famous person or yourself and email it to worldlywanda@hotmail.com.

Tech Trek

Tech Trek is a California AAUW sponsored science camp for girls who have completed the seventh grade.  In the summer, five weeklong camps are held at Whittier College, Fresno State University, Mills College, University of California at San Diego, and Stanford University.  The Fremont Branch sponsors girls from the Tri-City area to attend Tech Trek each year.   AAUW members can participate by being dorm mothers for the week, helping with administrative duties and assisting teachers.  The Tech Trek Contributions page summarizes the results of our previous fund-raising efforts.  For more information, give our local branch a call at (510) 728-9700.   The Tech Trek coordinator, Jill Bennett, will return your call.

Local Scholarships

For many years the Fremont Branch of AAUW has awarded scholarships to outstanding Ohlone Community College students who are continuing their education at a four year college or university.  Students apply through the Ohlone College Foundation.  University of Phoenix students who are enrolled full time and are in good standing are also eligible.  We continue to raise money for this important community service through various activities, with the results shown in Scholarship Contributions.

Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • must be female,
  • must have at least a 3.0 grade point average,
  • must reside in Tri-City area,
  • must be transferring to a four year college or university either in the fall of that year or the following spring.

Legal Advocacy Fund

AAUW's Legal Advocacy Fund provides financial aid and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination at universities and colleges and other work places.  It is the only support fund of this type in the United States.  Various activities support this effort including the LAF Walkathon held each October and the Spring Cycling Tour.

Educational Foundation

The Educational Foundation is the philanthropic arm of AAUW which creates endowments to award fellowships to American and international women at the dissertation or post-doctoral level.  Career Development and Community Action grants enable women to pursue community-based projects and career-related study beyond the bachelor's degree.  The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund supports elementary and secondary teachers as they explore new means of helping girls succeed in the fields of math and science.  The AAUW Fremont Branch encourages members to donate and all gifts to the Foundation are tax deductible.  These fellowships are awarded on a national level.  California has had many recipients, including members of the Fremont Branch.   Various activities are planned throughout the year to raise funds for the Educational Foundation.  The results of previous years efforts are summarized on the Educational Fund Contributions page.
